Here’s what you need to know about Google’s Direct Guest Join solution for Teams.

Summary:

  • Google introduced built-in interop for Google Meet hardware on ChromeOS to join Teams based on Direct Guest Join
  • Pexip provides a premium, high-quality alternative that works for all Google Meet hardware including ChromeOS and Android devices, with essential features and enterprise-grade management
  • Built-in interoperability is good for some organizations, but for many, Pexip is still the preferred choice due to its extended capabilities.

Google will now enable select Google Meet hardware to join Teams meetings via built-in interoperability. This functionality is based on what is commonly known as Direct Guest Join, a solution that works by running the meeting in a web browser inside the video bar.

Until Pexip announced Connect for Google Rooms last year, it was impossible to join Teams from Google Meet hardware. With Pexip, millions of organizations suddenly had an interoperability solution to their cross-platform meeting room challenges. With Google’s announcement, this now becomes possible by default, but only for some devices.

What’s the Pexip difference?

Pexip is a premium alternative to built-in interoperability. Connect for Google Rooms supports both Android and ChromeOS-based Google Meet hardware, making it a natural choice for organizations with mixed environments. End users can use any room to meet and get the same experience, with no need to worry about how that room works.

Pexip also provides enterprise-grade analytics and management capabilities, so admins can provide real-time support to their end users.

In addition, Pexip is working with Google to deliver essential features in the first half of 2026 such as in-meeting content sharing via HDMI and calling other meeting types via SIP.

Even more exciting roadmap features are planned, including lobby bypass, so users aren’t stuck waiting for a meeting.

For organizations already using Pexip Connect for Google Rooms, this announcement doesn’t change the value you already get. Your experience remains consistent across all rooms, platforms, and supported meeting types, and you’ll benefit from all the features coming soon.

Why choose Pexip

Pexip is ideal for organizations that need consistency and flexibility, for example:

  • When your meeting rooms include a mix of Android- and ChromeOS-based Google Meet hardware
  • When users want to share content in the room into meetings (coming soon)
  • When you expect high-quality, reliable Teams experiences across all devices
  • When you plan to invest further in Android-based hardware, or when you don’t want to be locked to a single make or model simply because it runs ChromeOS
  • When your organization regularly needs to join Teams meetings
  • When your organization relies on actionable analytics and insight for both operational efficiency or supportability

For teams with simpler needs, built-in interoperability via Direct Guest Join may be enough. But for those managing mixed environments or planning ahead, Pexip offers a consistent path forward.

Pexip already supports thousands of organizations that have tried Direct Guest Join with other native room systems such as Zoom and Teams, but found that the experience fell short. We plan to deliver a similar experience for Google Meet hardware.

Bottom line

Pexip provides a high-quality alternative to built-in Direct Guest Join interoperability for Google Meet hardware. We continue to invest in its capabilities, performance, and quality of experience. Pexip may not be the correct solution for everyone, but it certainly is a clear choice for the enterprise that needs to support its users across a variety of rooms and devices.
